Goal 5: Demonstrate leadership, communication, and collaboration skills in order to successfully deliver and advocate for information services

5a. Demonstrate effective collaboration and negotiate group dynamics in pursuit of a common goal

In IM 791 Organizational and Multicultural Communication class, the learning goals objectives were to learn how to communicate effectively in society. In order to meet the learning goals, we’ve had to negotiate and collaborate on a movie presentation about communication theories. My partner and I coordinated using Microsoft Teams to plan out the presentation. We created a Google Docs for our notes. I took the lead on the visual presentation and embedded the video clips in the presentation. In addition, I presented half of the slides. We were able to run a Pictionary activity with the class as a group. Overall, the presentation was fun and educational and covered many key communication theories for our exams.

5b. Articulate the importance of project management for information management

Project management is indispensable to the information management profession. I’ve learned this from my very first class in the MSIM program. IM 701 Information in Society, Organizations introduced me to the information profession and the current trends in information management. The attached artifact is a handout with information about the Internet of Things (IOT) and I mapped out jobs needed in a smart city environment. One of the main jobs was project management. Other career fields include Data Analyst and UX/UI designer. These career fields also have some component of project management in their job description. In order to be an effective project manager, the professional must be able to delegate the tasks of a project and control the metrics of the entire life cycle of the project. I think the MSIM program has given me the tools needed to track and plan for any project in the future.

5c. Use appropriate professional communication skills

  • 5.C.2. Write to achieve common understanding

As an information professional, I believe our main job is to educate users on how to use information technology. In IM750 Information Storage and Retrieval, one of the assignments involved creating an infographic on how to improve search engine ranking on sites like Google. Infographics are a great tool to communicate lots of information quickly. In this artifact, I’ve created a quick 12 list of steps I think anyone can follow on improving their search and retrieval efforts. I’m proud that I was able to fit in so much information without overwhelming the reader with a novel of words.

  • 5.C.4. Apply technology to connect, communicate, and collaborate

During IM750 Information Storage and Retrieval class, we’ve learned about web scraping (a way to collect data from a website) and other tools needed to get competitive intelligence from other sites.  The tools can be applied to technology to connect, communicate and collaborate among those in your organization. The artifact in this attachment features information I’ve obtained from across the web for the top 20 midwest colleges. In order to analyze the data, I’ve used Excel to create a pivot table. Then I’ve created trend lines to determine if certain metrics have a positive or negative correlation to the top ranking sites on search engines like Google and Bing. One of the findings from a scatter plot showed that the lower the tuition of a college, the higher the enrollment overall. This assignment introduced me to certain technology tools such as Scrape Hero to assist in data collection and how to communicate your findings to an organization.
